Often times people use drugs and alcohol to numb the pain of the abuse and trauma they have suffered. Research indicates that many individuals presenting for treatment for a substance use disorder also have a history of trauma. It is important to treat the whole person and recognize the underlying issues: anger, shame, low self-esteem, fear, and guilt as a result of being a victim of abuse or trauma.
* Gain an understanding of interpersonal trauma and its impact on relationships
