Individuals with a history of trauma tend to struggle with a sense of safety and security and have a difficult time connecting and maintaining healthy relationships.

Often times people use drugs and alcohol to numb the pain of the abuse and trauma they have suffered. Research indicates that many individuals presenting for treatment for a substance use disorder also have a history of trauma. It is important to treat the whole person and recognize the underlying issues: anger, shame, low self-esteem, fear, and guilt as a result of being a victim of abuse or trauma.
